JCR Committee Meeting 1 HT26 — 19.01.2026

In attendance: President, Secretary, VP Org, Treasurer, Housing, Charities, Welfare, Comrade Shakespeare, Entz, E&E, Women*, International, Access and Admissions, Academic Affairs, Lord Lindsay, Website and Computing, Bike Rep.

I. Co-option for LGBTQ+ Officer

Malachy: It’s important to have a port of call for LGBTQ+ concerns, I would like to organise a few events.

Toby: Any particular events?

Malachy: Events in Michaelmas are good for freshers e.g. teas.

Unanimous vote in favour of Malachy.

Malachy has been co-opted as LGBTQ+ Officer.

II. BOP

Toby: Confusion with Entz budgets last term.

Reuben: £530 budget, which is meant to include wages. But these were instead being taken from the bar’s money.

Michael: Can’t afford to pay the wages when included in that budget.

Adam: Not budgeted by the bar. Shouldn’t be coming from there.

Toby: Entz budget should be increased.

Michael: Some DJs cost £50/hr, which takes most of the budget.

Elizabeth: Do boptail sales not pay for wages?

Adam: There is essentially no profit margin on boptails.

Will: We would either have to make drinks weaker or more expensive.

Adam: Options - increase Entz budget or increase boptail prices.

Amalia: Staff wages per bop?

Reuben: £367 total for last term.

Michael: Spent £60–80/night on DJs. £65 on decorations.

Amalia: We can try to cap DJ budget at £100.

Toby: We can try to increase the Entz budget. You can also request more at committee on a one-off basis.

Amalia: How has staffing been done before?

Adam: 3–4 staff per bop, including one Entz rep who is not paid.

Michael: How to hire staff?

Will: Old group chats from last year.

Reuben: Might use the college card. Same for paying DJs?

Adam: DJs will invoice you — not the card.

Toby: 9pm–12:30am. One person on at 9pm, more later maybe.

Will: I will be around to help with set-up.

III. Wages

Toby: JCR roles pay the living wage £13.45, going up to £14.06.

Reuben: We’re currently paying £13.45. Oxford living wage is £14.06 in the next financial year, but update delayed. We can increase in April maybe, but college won’t love it.

Toby: We should be paying the living wage.

Michael: Right to work paperwork?

Adam: I can send the RTW paperwork.

Toby: Check people have done the RTW check before hiring.

Will: They need to submit the form, go in person for passport check at office on Little Clarendon Street.

IV. Fresher Rep appointments

Nabeed: I’m planning Freshers Week 2026 — any freshers who would be good as freps?

Zee and Amalia: Happy to nominate ourselves (+ Michael, consent pending)

Amalia: We can message on the Fresher group chat to see if anyone else is interested.

V. Postcards

Eve: Sad that no souvenir shops sell Balliol postcards. Could be nice to sell postcards with pictures of Balliol at plodge? Maybe run a competition for photos and designs. Thoughts?

Adam: College probably wouldn’t let the JCR keep the money.

Jade: Support for idea.

VI. AOB

Zee: How to get funding for a play?

Toby: At GMs, which will be 1st Feb and 1st March.

Eve: I will send an email about submitting motions soon.

Avrah: Please fill out the Mainsite housing ballot form if you want to live there next year. (Passive aggressively:) Read the actual words above each text box and respond correctly!!!

Adam: Table football tonight.

Amalia: Second years — please fill in Halfway Hall forms.

Reuben: FYI, budgets don’t roll over, so spend them this term!

Meeting adjourned.
